Introduction to Microsoft Word

About this course

This course is designed for those who have limited or no experience using MS Word. This course will also help you with simple MS Word related activities that you do as part of your daily office admin responsibilities. You will learn to produce simple workplace documents using the basic features of Microsoft Word including formatting text, cutting, copying and pasting, headers and footers, page alignment and orientation, page set up, page numbers, margins, grammar and spell check, and paragraph formatting. This course has been aligned with BSBITU211 Produce digital text documents from BSB20115 Certificate II in Business. If you wish to gain a nationally recognized certificate, you will need to complete all required assessments during the course.


Basic computer operations including keyboarding and mouse handling skills required.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, you should be able to -

Prepare to produce documents
1.1 Adjust workspace, furniture and equipment to suit user ergonomic environments
1.2 Ensure workspace meets organisational work health and safety requirements for digital device operation, taking into account the type of device to be used
1.3 Identify document purpose, audience and presentation requirements, and clarify with relevant personnel as required
1.4 Identify organisational and task requirements for document layout and design
1.5 Select most appropriate word processing application to produce document, in accordance with available resources and organisational policies

Produce documents digitally
2.1 Format document using appropriate application functions to adjust layout to meet information requirements, in accordance with organisational style and presentation requirements
2.2 Use application features to identify and manipulate display options and controls
2.3 Use relevant help functions to overcome simple issues relating to document presentation and production

Finalise documents
3.1 Review and edit final document, and prepare for delivery in accordance with organisational and task requirements
3.2 Deliver document to relevant audience within designated timelines and in accordance with organisational requirements
3.3 Name and store document appropriately in accordance with organisational requirements and exit application without information loss

Learning strategies

This course will be delivered in a classroom environment led by a qualified and industry experienced training. Learning methods will include face to face lecture, case studies, demonstrations, questions and answers.

Assessment strategies

Assessment for this course will include both summative and formative through written questions and answers, observations and practical demonstration of knowledge and skills.
