Barista and Food Hygiene is a Nationally Accredited course.  Once you complete the Barista & Hygiene course you will be ready to work in all organisations with permanent or temporary kitchen premises or smaller food preparation or bar areas, including restaurants, cafes, clubs, hotels, and bars; tour operators; attractions; function, event, exhibition and conference catering; educational institutions; aged care facilities; correctional centres; hospitals; defence forces; cafeterias, kiosks, canteens and fast-food outlets; residential catering; in-flight and other transport catering.

Unit SITXFSA005 Use hygienic practices for food safety will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to use personal hygiene practices to prevent contamination of food that might cause food-borne illnesses. It requires the ability to follow predetermined organisational procedures and to identify and control food hazards.

It applies to food handlers who directly handle food or food contact surfaces such as cutlery, plates and bowls during the course of their daily work activities. This includes cooks, chefs, caterers, kitchen stewards, kitchen hands, bar, and food and beverage attendants, and sometimes room attendants and front office staff.

Food handlers must comply with the requirements contained within the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.

In some States and Territories businesses are required to designate a food safety supervisor who is required to be certified as competent in this unit through a registered training organisation.

SITXFSA005 is a prerequisite to SITHFAB025

SITHFAB025 Prepare and serve espresso coffee will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to extract and serve espresso coffee beverages using commercial espresso machines and grinders. It requires the ability to advise customers on coffee beverages, select and grind coffee beans, prepare and assess espresso coffee beverages and to use, maintain and clean espresso machines and grinders. Complex repairs of equipment would be referred to specialist service technicians.

This unit applies to any hospitality organisation that serves espresso coffee beverages, including cafes, restaurants, bars, clubs, function and event venues.
It applies to espresso machine operators who operate with some level of independence and under limited supervision.
The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

Entry Requirements

Whilst there are no entry requirements for this qualification, it is expected that you have adequate language, literacy and numeracy skills and computer skills to be able to interact with peers, trainers and completing assessments using a computer either in the classroom, at home or at your workplace.

This course includes the following units of competency:
 SITXFSA005 Use hygienic practices for food safety.
SITHFAB025 Prepare and serve espresso coffee.

Delivery Strategies
The theory components for each of the units will be completed self-paced online via MOODLE and MUST be completed before the practical class.  The practical training will be delivered onsite by a qualified industry skilled trainer at our Western Sydney Skills Hub at North Parramatta. Address – 410 Church St, Level 3, North Parramatta, NSW 2151.

NB: A commercial kitchen / café or simulated commercial kitchen is required for 3 assessments within the, Use hygienic practices for food safety unit. Other venues and premises are used by Parramatta Community College when delivering this unit.

All participants will be supported by our qualified and skilled team throughout their learning journey.

Assessment Strategies
Assessments for this qualification include both formative and summative assessments which involve a variety of activities including knowledge questions, demonstration, observations etc.

What to Bring to Class
Please bring a pen, paper and folder to class. All other course resources will be provided for you on the day.

Student must adhere to the uniform policy including.
Closed in non-slip shoes
Long pants
Long sleeve or T-shirt only
Apron

Resource Requirements
Learner manuals will be provided at no further cost than the course fee. This course requires the use of computer and internet either in the classroom or at the students' home or workplace to research the relevant legislations, industry standards and to develop relevant workplace documents.

How much work is involved in completing the course?

Please note assessments for this course involve significant work both during and after the sessions. You will have maximum of two attempts to submit your assessments in each unit of competency. If you are considered Not Yet Competent after the second submission, you may choose to undertake a gap tutorial, which will attract further fee.

Duration of the course is 4 hours.

Course Fee: $195

Competency outcome
On successful completion of all the assessments, you will be awarded with an AQF Statement of Attainment.

After successful completion of this qualification, you may choose to pursue the following opportunities:
