COURSE DESCRIPTION
On completion of this course you will be able to make improvements to create a garden you will love to be in.
You will learn about gathering information for site assessment, soil type etc. Learn basic principles for garden design and how to prepare sketch plans.
We look at improving soils, plant material and landscaping material selection. You will learn methods of planting, mulching, watering and weeding a garden.
You will also discover how to keep on top of important seasonal gardening tasks including shaping and pruning techniques.
6 classroom lessons, plus 2 field trips to a garden/nursery for hands on experience. Classroom lessons held on Wednesday nights, field trips to be held on Saturdays in week 4 and week 7, exact times/locations of field trips to be discussed in class.
COURSE CONTENT
• Site assessment.
• Measure and prepare basic site plans.
• Basic garden design principles.
• Improvements to garden soils.
• Select and purchase of plant materials and landscaping materials.
• Planting plant materials.
• Garden maintenance including fertilising, watering, weeding and pruning.
• Seasonal tasks identified.
• Plant material identification.
COURSE OUTCOMES
• A very laid back, fun learning experience, tailored to suit all levels of student knowledge.
• Students will be able to gather information regarding their garden block.
• They should be able to prepare to scale basic sketch plans showing improvements to their garden.
• Test the soil pH to make improvements to difficult or poor soils.
• Students should be able to select, purchase and plant out appropriate plant materials and ideal specimens of same.
• Learn to look after your garden and make the maintenance less onerous.
• There is an emphasis on identifying suitable plant material of the Sydney garden.
