Microsoft Word for Beginners

About this course

This course is designed for those who have limited or no experience using Microsoft Word. This course will also help you with simple MS Word related activities that you do as part of your daily office admin responsibilities. You will learn to produce simple workplace documents using the basic features of Microsoft Word including formatting text, cutting, copying and pasting, headers and footers, page alignment and orientation, page set up, page numbers, margins, grammar and spell check, and paragraph formatting. Certificate of Attendance will be issued upon completion of the course.


Basic computer operations including keyboarding and mouse handling skills required.

Resources required

As this course will be delivered in Windows 10, it is expected that you have this operation system already loaded on your computer. Your computer or laptop must be operational. If it has any known fault that may disrupt your learning, it is recommended that you do not enrol into this course.

You are also expected to have Office 2016, a good internet connection, a web camera (essential as the trainer will need to see your screen) and a printer (optional). Once you have enrolled, you will receive instructions on how to join the virtual classroom.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, you should be able to -

Prepare to produce documents
1.1 Adjust workspace, furniture and equipment to suit user ergonomic environments
1.2 Ensure workspace meets organisational work health and safety requirements for digital device operation, taking into account the type of device to be used
1.3 Identify document purpose, audience and presentation requirements, and clarify with relevant personnel as required
1.4 Identify organisational and task requirements for document layout and design
1.5 Select most appropriate word processing application to produce document, in accordance with available resources and organisational policies

Produce documents digitally
2.1 Format document using appropriate application functions to adjust layout to meet information requirements, in accordance with organisational style and presentation requirements
2.2 Use application features to identify and manipulate display options and controls
2.3 Use relevant help functions to overcome simple issues relating to document presentation and production

Finalise documents
3.1 Review and edit final document, and prepare for delivery in accordance with organisational and task requirements
3.2 Deliver document to relevant audience within designated timelines and in accordance with organisational requirements
3.3 Name and store document appropriately in accordance with organisational requirements and exit application without information loss

Learning strategies

This course will be delivered in in a virtual classroom environment via video conferencing led by a qualified and industry experienced trainer. Learning methods will include face to face lecture via video conferencing, case studies, demonstrations, questions and answers.

Assessment strategies

There is no assessment for this course; however, the trainer may ask the participants to complete some activities to ensure they are gaining the intended skills.
