About the course

This unit HLTAID011 Provide first aid is designed to provide the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty and this training is the minimum requirement for the workplace first aider. The unit covers different first aiding skills including responding to an emergency, applying appropriate first aid procedures, communicating details of the incident, and reviewing the incident. These skills are based on the ARC (Australian Resuscitation Council) and other Australian national peak clinical body guidelines. Therefore, this unit is required for all workers who may be required to provide first aid response whether in community and workplace settings.

This course also includes CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) HLTAID009 and Provide Basic Emergency Life Support HLTAID010 based on the ARC (Australian Resuscitation Council) guidelines.

The HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation is designed to provide the skills and knowledge required to perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) based on Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines to suit the learner needs. This unit is compulsory for all workers who may be required to provide CPR whether in community and workplace settings. This course includes defibrillation (AED) training. Therefore, if you are looking for AED training, this course will provide you skills and knowledge to operate AED.

This unit HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support is designed to provide the skills and knowledge to respond to an emergency, for example, bleeding, shock, asthma, anaphylaxis, heart attack, angina etc. The unit also designed to provide skills and knowledge required to use the appropriate first aid procedures and to communicate the necessary details of the emergency situations to the others. The unit also includes CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and care of unconscious person based on the ARC (Australian Resuscitation Council) guidelines. Therefore, this unit is compulsory for all workers who may be required to provide emergency response whether in community and workplace settings.

The practical session will be delivered in a classroom environment by a qualified industry skilled trainer at Western Sydney Skills Hub at North Parramatta. Address – 410 Church St, Level 3, Suite 34, North Parramatta, NSW 2151. Please note that classes may not be available when you are reading this course description, but the college still encourages the potential candidates to register their interest by joining the waiting list (available at the bottom of this page).

Prerequisites

You must complete the knowledge test and assessed to be competent before attending the practical class (Please see detail information in the “Assessment Condition” section). Whilst there are no other prerequisites for this course, it is expected that you have adequate language, literacy and numeracy skills and computer skills to be able to interact with peers, trainers and completing assessments using a computer in the classroom. You will also need to be physically fit enough to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR on the floor.

Delivery Strategies

This course will be delivered face to face classroom-based lecture with a qualified and skilled trainer and the self-paced journey for a thorough understanding of the competency requirements and to prepare for the assessments. Learning strategies include role play, demonstrations, lectures, and classroom activities etc. All participants will be supported by our qualified and skilled team throughout their learning journey.

Assessment Strategies

Assessments for this qualification include both formative and summative assessments which involves a variety of activities including knowledge questions, demonstration of performance, and observations etc. All participants will be supported by our qualified and skilled team throughout their learning journey.

Reasonable adjustment to the delivery and assessment

The college has taken the following measures to minimize risk of contamination arising from the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • All students are to maintain at least 4 meters distance when participating in the training and the practical skills assessment session
  • All equipment and floor mats will be properly sanitized before and after commencing the practical sessions
  • Before commencing the practical sessions, temperature check will be conducted for individual students using appropriate non-contact measuring tool e.g. laser temperature checking equipment.
  • Students who feel unwell will be advised not to attend classes and those who appear will be asked to go home. These students will be placed in the next available sessions.
  • Students will not be required to breathe directly into a manikin, instead students will be asked to perform breaths to the side of the manikin.

Assessment Condition

Once enrolled, you will be sent the learner resources and Knowledge questions booklet minimum of 5 days prior of the course commencement. Once received, you are require to complete the knowledge question booklet and submit the booklet 2 days prior of the course commencement. Our trainer will then assess your knowledge question booklet and provide you feedback before attending the practical class. If there are adjustment to be made on the knowledge question booklet after receiving feedback, make the changes and re-send your booklet to be assessed.

Resource Requirements

Learner manuals will be provided at no further cost than the course fee. This course requires the use of computer and internet either in the classroom or at the students’ home or workplace to research the relevant legislations, industry standards and to develop relevant workplace documents.

What if I find that the course is not suitable for me?

Once you have commenced your study, you cannot cancel your enrolment. Therefore, we strongly advise you to read the course information, especially who will benefit from this course, the units of competency covered and deliver and assessment strategies. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

If you believe you already have skills and experience relevant to the competencies of this course, please let the trainer know for a recognition. Please note that applying for RPL may not automatically result in the issuing of the skill set. In case of any gaps found, you will be advised of those gaps and asked to provide further evidence against your RPL claim. If you are still considered Not Yet Competent (NYC), you may be offered a tutorial for those gaps, which will incur further cost.

Competency outcome

On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded with a Statement of Attainment quoting the relevant units of competencies from above.
